Project Description
Client: Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
Location: Blacksburg, VA
Size: 35,000 sf
This project is located at the southeast corner of Stanger St. and Old Turner St. in Blacksburg, VA, where the Femoyer Hall, a 35,000-square-foot residence hall built in 1949, was demolished. The new Upper Quad Residence Hall is a 56,650 square-foot, five-story building housing 301 student beds for the Corps of Cadets. Featuring a North Wing and a West Wing the state-of-the-art residence hall was constructed using a precast concrete solution to ensure longevity and durability. This residence hall features additional spaces including conference rooms, lounge on each floor, a group kitchen, regimental offices and an adequate amount of storage. The site design included fire truck access, cadet dumpsters, bike racks, ADA parking, and pedestrian-vehicular sightline considerations. Due to significant grade differences on the west side, the project provides an accessible route from the intersection of Stanger St. and Old Turner St. to the Upper Quad.
